Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge

The Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge is originally believed to have been created by the marsh region that was formed by the Yukon and Kuskokwim rivers and has a primarily a Tundra type of vegetation – meaning the lack of any vegetation in the ice covered plains. Thought the name suggests this is a delta this is just about a hundred feet high and hence is more a flat surface of land than anything else. Thanks to the ice and snow that cover these plains, there are innumerable water bodies such as pools, lakes and ponds. Once you cross these tuntras, you can see a few shrub vegetations and after that you will find that the land is slightly elevated and you could even see mountainous ranges there.

When you are here you are definitely going to think that the world congregation of the water birds is happening now in Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge. No jokes – you will see almost all types of water birds with all their different hues and cries here at this refuge. It is indeed a blessing to get a view of these different categories of birds that include a wide variety of ducks and geese.

While you are here in The Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge you can also take a look at the Eskimo population of the world and more interestingly have a peep at their ice houses or igloos as they are called and how they manage the biting cold. The Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge is said to house around twenty five thousand Eskimos.
